What do you call a ghost that haunts a chemistry lab?

A methylated spirit.

Chemicals for Hangovers

Whenever there is a party or a holiday season coming up, adults end up drinking. Every person has his or her own favourite way of curing hangover. However, here are some chemicals that will help you get over a hangover.

However, it does not really matter what type of alcoholic beverage we drink or the order in which we drink, the next morning, we are sure to wake up with a hangover. By hangover, we do not mean the famous Hollywood movie "The Hangover". By hangover, we mean the effect of alcohol on our body.

Every person has his or her own favourite way of curing hangover. However, here are some chemicals that will help you get over a hangover.

What is a hangover?

Before going any further with the topic, let us first understand what is this hangover? No matter what type of alcoholic beverage you drink, you are sure to feel the effects the next day morning. The hangover is nothing but the effects that the alcohol has on your body. The effects include headache, dizziness, and nausea and dehydration. Also, some people can have fatigue, cotton mouth or a weird feeling in the mouth and a queasy stomach.

In short, a hangover is the Nature's way of reminding you that alcohol is not good for your body. The hangover or effects of alcohol happen because your liver can only process a specific amount of alcohol during a given period of time.

Also, drinking alcohol tends to rock the entire central nervous system of our body and our body reacts to the alcohol by way of hangover.

Chemicals to cure

Just like every problem, even hangover has a solution. There are some chemicals that will help you bring down the effect of alcohol.

Water

Drinking plenty of water will help you detoxify your system and hydrate your body. Water helps bring down the otherwise long-lasting hangover effect and makes you feel comfortable.

Aspirin

Aspirin helps in relieving the pain and also reduces inflammation of the irritated tissues. Aspirin helps address one of the causes of the pain. Aspirin powders work most quickly, but buffered aspirin may cause less stomach upset.

Vitamin B Complex

B vitamins help the body to cope with stress, including physical stress that is caused due to exposure to ethanol and its metabolites, methanol that is found in red wine and cognac, and sulfites that are used to preserve beverages.

Cysteine

Cysteine is a type of amino acid that directly reduces the negative effects of acetaldehyde that is found in alcohol. Cysteine is the primary component of the chemical glutathione and is quickly used in the detoxification process. Eggs are rich in cysteine, so having a 'raw egg' is a great remedy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant and helps minimize the tissue damage and hangover discomfort. Alcohol also depresses the immune system, so taking vitamin C will help ward off the cold or flu after drinking.

Sports Drink

Fruit juice or an electrolyte sports drink is better than water when it comes to instant rehydrating the body and in replacing the lost minerals. The carbohydrates or the sugar will help restore normal blood sugar levels. Blood sugar tends to drop in response to alcohol, leaving the person hypoglycaemic.

Prevention is better than cure and hence it is always a good idea to stay away from alcohol and avoid hangover completely instead than finding ways to cure it. However, if you end up drinking, then do consider the above options to make yourself comfortable once again.
